According to media reports, pickup points of major online retailers in Russia have started closing in large numbers.
A severe staffing shortage is the cause. Retail lacks more than a million employees, Forbes reports.
Several factors drive the shortage: many workers left for military service; the demographic dip of the 1990s reduced young working-age people today; and foreign labor outflow linked to tighter controls, enforcement raids, and an unstable ruble.
Industry and logistics are also pulling talent away from retail.
Companies try to retain or attract staff with higher pay, shorter shifts, and flexible schedules — with limited success.
“There are no applicants, even when pay rises to 3–5 thousand rubles per shift,” laments the owner of a large pickup-point network.
